Ayurvedic Head Massage (Shiroabhyanga)

This unique holistic treatment is steeped in the ancient East Indian Ayurvedic tradition.  It has been used for thousands of years to maintain and improve total health and well-being, from child to adult. A daily head massage was a way to ‘enhance the body’s innate wisdom of healing.’ It was part of an important daily practice to strengthen and tone muscles, nerves, skin, and deep tissues of the body.

ShiroBLISS Ayurvedic Head Massage offers both therapeutic benefit, as well as a relaxing and enjoyable health and healing experience. Most people who have received this massage are unable to find the words to describe how they feel immediately after the massage. Many will say “its relaxing, but it’s more than that,” or “that was heavenly!”  Some people are simply speechless and leave feeling much more relaxed, grounded, calm, and happy than they have in a while.

This massage differs from an Indian Head Massage that you might have at a spa. ShiroBLISS massages are traditionally performed with the client sitting in a comfortable chair, well supported, so that the practitioner can access the whole upper body and head (front, back, and sides).

The positive effects of Indian Head Massage are achieved by using a variety of massage and movement techniques and aromatherapy massage oils to help relax and release physical and mental tension, and restore harmony to the body and mind. In addition, points in the body (called marma), similar to acupuncture and acupressure points, are massaged and stimulated, and are considered to ‘connect the physical body with subtle energy bodies’ and they often relate to specific organs or body areas.

In the Ayurvedic tradition, marma point therapy is believed to enliven pure consciousness in the body and stimulate a spontaneous healing response.  These points are like switches, when gently stimulated, bring divine energy directly into our bodies. The divine energy, or prana, is the life force which sustains us, which keeps us alive.  The points are massaged in order to restore the body to normal function, balance the body’s energies, and either energize or relax the body as necessary for improved health.’
